Benefits Data Trust Names Wendy Starner Interim CEO

Benefits Access Nonprofit Focuses on Reinventing in Post-COVID Era

June 11, 2024 (Philadelphia, PA) - Benefits Data Trust (BDT), a national nonprofit organization that helps eligible families and individuals connect to assistance programs, today announced that Wendy Starner has been named interim CEO, replacing Trooper Sanders. Ms. Starner had previously served as BDT’s Chief Financial Officer and will continue to lead the organization’s mission to create more effective ways to access the social safety net.

“During these challenging times, I appreciate the confidence that the Board of Directors has placed in me to serve them and BDT in this capacity as interim CEO and CFO,” said Ms. Starner. “I will be working with the Board of Directors and the Executive Team to develop a plan for a new structure, system, and processes that will lay the foundation for a future BDT. Guiding our planning and decision-making process will be BDT’s existing Theory of Change combined with fiscal accountability so that we can marry our finances with our mission. I’m thankful to have the support of the amazing BDT team and Board as we recommit to what we do best: helping people today, modernizing benefits access for tomorrow.”

For 20 years, BDT has helped improve the lives of Americans by providing easier access to public benefits and assistance through direct service, technology, and policy and practice. It has produced a significant impact; in 2023 alone, $13 billion+ in available benefits were made more accessible, helping as many as 3.5 million people. BDT has gained the support of national leaders who have provided funding, strategic support, and partnership.

“We thank Trooper for his vision of what BDT can be and wish him the very best,” said Margaret Berger Bradley, Secretary and spokesperson of the BDT Board of Directors. “I want to express our gratitude and support for Wendy stepping into this role during this pivotal time. Like Wendy and the BDT staff, the Board is driven by BDT’s mission of helping people live healthier, more independent lives by creating smarter ways to access essential benefits and services. Wendy is dedicated to making sure BDT moves beyond the challenges we face today while focusing on BDT’s most special and essential mission.”

Ms. Starner has a history of bringing best business practices to organizations like Messiah University, Franklin and Marshall College and the Hershey Trust Company. Before joining BDT as the CFO, she was the COO of Info-Matrix Corporation, a private, woman-owned technology systems consulting services firm in central Pennsylvania that provides consulting to the private and public sectors. She began her career as an entrepreneur, providing CFO consulting and financial services to various for-profit and nonprofit organizations.  Throughout her career she has developed a unique skill set combined with financial acumen that helps organizations transform and navigate business challenges, which makes her ideally positioned to lead BDT at this pivotal moment.
